Join your fellow Tillamook County residents in the second annual Tillamook County Reads. This year’s theme focuses on historical fiction, often with a flare for adventure.

Trask by Don Berry

Set in 1848 on the wild edge of the continent, in the rainforests and rugged headlands of the Oregon coast, Trask follows a mountain man’s quest for new opportunities and new land to settle. Elbridge Trask is a restless man, a gambler with God, nature, and life itself. Yearning for change, he sets out with Wakila, a young Clatsop Indian, and Charley Kehwa, a tamanawis man or spiritual leader of the tribe, on an extraordinary journey of discovery.

Fire on the Wind by Linda Crew
It’s August 1933 in the great forests of Oregon, and it is so hot and dry at the Blue Star logging camp that Storie Faye, eighth grader, can’t blow out a match–it keeps relighting itself. A fire starts and at first folks aren’t too worried, but tension mounts as new fires pop up. Loggers turn into firefighters, until the fires come together, creating an 18-mile-long wall of flame, and getting out alive is all that matters.

Abe Lincoln Crosses a Creek by Debora Hopkinson
In 1816 Abe and Austin decide to use a log to cross a swollen and turbulent Knob Creek. When Abe falls into the water, Austin saves his life and Abe promises that he’ll never forget it. Even when he’s the president of a war-torn country, Abe fondly remembers his old friend.

A Big Summer Reading Thank You!

The Tillamook County Library would like to offer a huge thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s summer reading program. We had a record breaking number of individuals finishing the program. Almost four hundred children read for ten hours and over three hundred adults read their eight books. A big surprise was how well the new teen program turned out. Nearly one hundred teens took time out of their busy summers to read for twenty hours. Great job everyone!

Summer Reading in Tillamook County!

Catch a film, try a new genre, attend a library program and more! Tillamook County Library Summer Reading Programs are open to children, teens and adults with programs, prizes and special events. The programs will begin the week of June 14th and run through August 19th. Get your whole family involved!

The theme for the children’s summer reading program is “Make a Splash-READ!” There will be weekly programs every Thursday at the Tillamook library. Children (ages 3-5) will meet from 10:00-10:30am and children (ages 6-12) will meet from 2:00-3:00pm. A free book and certificate will be presented at the end of the summer to all children who have read 10 hours or more. Preschoolers will receive a free book and certificate if they have someone read to them for at least 10 hours. There will also be a drawing for special prizes. (more info)

Teens (ages 13-18) are invited to “Make Waves at Your Library.” Complete 20 hours of reading to receive a free book and prize and a chance to win an iPod Nano. Attend weekly programs to increase your chances to win. Drawings for weekly prizes will be held at the end of each program. Teen programs are every Thursday at 5:30pm at the Tillamook County Library and will include movies, crafts and an end-of-summer luau. (more info)

Adults, keep your mind active this summer and participate in a reading program designed just for you. Read 8 books (or more!) and receive a coupon worth $2.00 for a free book from The Bookstore and a chance to win prizes. Grand prizes include a fishing trip on the Siggi-G and a TAPA Theater Pass. Special adult events include programs with best-selling authors, acclaimed musicians and performers. (more info)

Registration for all programs begins on June 14th. You can register at any library branch or the new Tillamook County Library Bookmobile. Lincoln Exhibit at the Tillamook County Library

A world-class traveling exhibit featuring reproduction artifacts from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois is coming to the Tillamook County Library from May 14th to June 11th. The public may view the exhibit free of charge.

Basket Weaver Connie Graves

Connie Graves will share information about her Umpqua, Kalapuya, and Flathead heritage on March 19th at the Tillamook County Library. She was born in McMinnville and grew up in Valley Junction. She began learning the art of basket weaving twenty-five years ago, but when she started collecting her own materials, weaving became essential to her life.
Connie weaves baskets from cattail, cedar bark, spruce root, juncus, willow, hazel and horsehair. She gathers her materials from the area around her home. It can take up to a year to prepare the reeds and rushes for weaving. She is committed to passing on her weaving skills to keep the tradition alive. Graves will share her culture and display traditional basketry from 12:00pm – 1:00pm on March 19th at the Tillamook County Library.
Participants will have an opportunity to practice a cording activity with raffia from 1:00pm – 2:00pm.
This lunchtime program is open to the public. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy hearing about the traditions of the Umpqua, Kalapuya and Flathead.

Dear Luke: Consumer Reports?

This is not a syndicated feature or a weekly column (in fact it might not go anywhere), but every once in a while I get a question about library resources that I think everyone should know the answer to. So like all concerned citizens who like to give advice, I am trying out a Dear Abby column.

Our first letter comes all the way from Garibaldi:

Someone asked me today if it would be possible to get Consumer Reports on our database. Is that ever an option?

Dear Tired,
Not only is it an option, it is a here and now reality. With our Gale subscription to General One File we have access to full text Consumer Report Articles going back to 1999. The only catch is new articles must age for six months (more or less) before we have access to them. In other words in February of 2010, we have access to articles from June 2009 and older. Since not all products are reviewed every month, or even every year, this is still a valuable resource.

To access full text articles from Consumer Reports visit the library catalog at www.beachbooks.org

Click on the database tab.

Select General Interest Magazines (or click on the Gale General OneFile icon)

On the yellow tabs at the top, click on Browse Publications

Under Find Title, enter Consumer Reports

From the list select Consumer Reports (you will also notice we have some full text access to a few other Consumer Reports resources).

After Selecting Consumer Reports you will have the option to Search Within This Publication. This is where you can enter your search terms and find Consumer Reports articles (after running your search, don’t forget to check the Full Text Only box if you are looking for articles you can read right now).

New Time for Live Saturday Music Performances

The Tillamook library live music sessions have moved to a new time. They will now be hosted most Saturdays from 3-5 p.m. in the library’s downstairs meeting room. These sessions are open to the public. Musicians are welcome! For more information contact Sara Charlton at (503) 842-4792

Improved service for low vision community members at the Tillamook County Library

There is now a permanent VideoEye station located at the library in Tillamook. The VideoEye is a magnification tool designed to assist those with low vision. It is an excellent reading aid that utilizes a camera to relay a magnified image to a television screen. The system is easy to use and has automatic focus and light adjustment that aids in rendering a crisp enlarged image in color.

The VideoEye was donated to the library by Mildred Davy’s son, the late Dan Davy. It is located on the second floor of the library and can be used during regular library hours. For more information please call the library at 503 842-4792.

Arrrrr! Pirate Movies at the Tillamook County Librarrrry!

Bring your family and friends to the Tillamook library for our third installment of “Monday Night Movies.” The Tillamook County library will be showing pirate movies January 4th – February 22nd. Movies will be shown in the Copeland Community Room. The doors open at 5:45 p.m. and the movies will start promptly at 6 p.m. Popcorn and a shipshape atmosphere will be provided. All movies are free and open to the public.
