Bring your family and friends to the Tillamook County library for our second installment of “Monday Night Movies.” The Tillamook County library will be showing holiday movie classics November 9th – December 21st. Movies will be shown in the Copeland Community Room. The doors open at 5:45 p.m. and the movies will start promptly at 6 p.m. Popcorn and a festive atmosphere will be provided. All movies are free and open to the public.

Classic Oscar Winners Based on Books

Are you searching for a fun no cost way to spend a damp fall evening? “Monday Night Movies” at the Tillamook County Library is the perfect solution. The doors to the Copeland and Hatfield rooms open at 5:30 p.m. with the movie starting promptly at 6 p.m. The movies run for approximately one and a half to two hours. Popcorn and a cheery atmosphere will be provided. Our initial movie theme is Classic Oscar Winners Based on Books. The first series of “Monday Night Movies” will began September 14 and run through October 26.   An ex-fighter gets a job working on the gang-ridden waterfront under a crooked gangster boss. This gritty crime film is based on a short story by Budd Schulberg. Starring Marlon Brando and Karl Malden.

  Around the World in 80 Days
  Puctual Englishman Phileas Fogg believes in progress, science, and intellectual deduction. When a member of the Reform Club challenges him on the impossibility of completing a round-the-world tour in eighty days, he wagers his entire fortune to prove that he can do it. This fantastical film is based on the novel Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Vern. Filmed with an all-star international cast.

  Gigi
  A musical set in Paris in which a girl trained as a high society courtesan falls in love with a rich and handsome boulevardier. This tale of star-crossed love is based on the novel Gigi by Colette. Starring Leslie Caron and Maurice Chevalier.

It has been busy at the Tillamook County Library.  Our adult summer reading program has finaly come to a close.  A huge congratulations to all those who partisapated.  We are currently developing a Monday Night Movie program, which should be a lot of fun.  Look for details soon.  In the mean time, here is a quick tour of the main library’s children’s department.

We think our local readers are celebrities. If you would like to make your own READ poster bring one of your favorite books to the front desk. A helpful staff member will happily take your photograph and, in a couple of days, your READ poster will be on display throughout the end of May. Each participant will qualify to enter a drawing for one official American Library Association READ poster. The drawing for the Twilight READ poster and the Danica Patrick READ poster will be held on Saturday, May 30th.

We are in the process of trying out some video tutorials and tips for using the library.  Please let us know if they are helpful.

Stubborn Twig Author Lauren Kessler will present a program on March 20th at 3 p.m. in the Tillamook Library’s Meeting room. There will be a reception at 4:15 p.m. At 5 p.m. Oregon Poet Laureate Lawson Inada will speak about his internment experience and conduct a writing workshop.

The Tillamook library will host live music sessions every Saturday from 2-4 p.m. in the library’s downstairs meeting room.  These sessions are open to the public.  Musicians are welcome!

In 1935, after thirty years of research and ten years of writing, William H. Ukers completed his masterpiece All About Tea.  This two volume set contains 54 chapters, 1152 pages, 1700 illustrations and approximately 600,000 words all devoted to the princely subject of tea.

Perhaps the most accurately named two volume set in Tillamook’s entire reference collection, All About Tea is very much all about tea.  With chapters like ‘Tea’s Conquest of Java and Sumatra’, ‘Evolution of Tea Machinery’ and ‘History of Tea Advertising’, Ukers has left no aspect of tea uncovered.

One of my favorite items in the book is the Tea Thesaurus.  Located in the front of the second volume, the Tea Thesaurus is broken into three categories; The Plant, The Leaf and The Beverage.  Ukers’ own words best describe the thesaurus:

Presenting a Conveniently Arranged List of Encomiums and Descriptive Phrases Applicable to the Plant, the Leaf, an the Beverage

My favorite entries come from the Beverage section and include; Greatest friend to the man of letters, Lure that lurks in the teapot, and Tongue-running, smile-smoothing, heart-opening, wink-tipping cordial.

I would highly recommend visiting the Tillamook library and taking a look at All About Tea.  Even if you do not care for tea, I think you will find these two unusual volumes worth the trip.
